Spica is a massive star, so when the helium in the core exhausts, the nuclear fusion keeps going. Eventually the temperature reaches high enough to burn carbon to oxygen, silicon, neon, sulpher, and lastly iron. The iron is the most stable, so it doesn't go through nuclear fusion to make anything else. Since the iron is so heavy, and there is no heat to balance the gravity, the iron collapses until it reaches nuclear densities. Once the iron can drop down no more, the core bounces it back up, which causes an supernova explosion. For one month, the star burns so brightly, it's brighter than a galaxy made up of a billion stars. The supernova then blasts the other elements off into space with the iron. The clouds of elements then go into space and create new stars that are richer in heavy elements like iron, and the rest of Spica turns into a black hole.
The death of an ordinary star is different from the death of a massive star because once the helium exhausts in the star, the nuclear fusion stops, and the core collapses until it can convert helium to carbon. While the core collapses, the outer envelope expands and the star becomes a red giant, exhausting helium at its core. Then the outer envelope will lose all its mass, leaving behind a hot core of carbon. The radiation from the core will then make a planetary nebula. The core will eventually cool and become a white dwarf.
